Our Selves on Screen, Still Continuing 🌈

From June to July, CathayPlay joined screening partners across Tokyo, Hong Kong, Chiang Mai, Melbourne, Hamburg, The Hague, Paris, Auckland and New York to present Our Selves on Screen: A Global Chinese Queer Film Showcase.

From People’s Park, Langit Budak Biru and Christian to Water Under the Bridge, Chinese Closet, Mama Rainbow and Golden Gate Girls, the programme brought together films from different generations, regions and filmmaking contexts, exploring love, bodies and identity alongside family, faith, coming out, social realities and queer histories.

The showcase allowed these films to move beyond a single platform or viewing context, travelling from an online catalogue into bookstores, cinemas, cultural spaces and communities across different cities, where they could encounter new audiences.

Across Asia, Europe, Oceania and North America, 10 screening partners brought the programme to 9 cities, where more than 140 audience members encountered these films in person.

The showcase has ended, but the films remain.

LGBTQIA+ is a permanent and continually growing part of the CathayPlay catalogue. We want these works to be discovered not only during Pride Month, but throughout the year — watched, discussed and rediscovered in new contexts.

Not Sure Where to Begin? Ask Jacky #

Jacky is CathayPlay’s AI film discovery assistant.

You can simply tell Jacky what you are looking for:

“Recommend documentaries about coming out and Asian families.”
“Are there any lighter Chinese-language queer shorts?”
“I liked Langit Budak Biru. What should I watch next?”
“Build me a five-film programme about queer cinema and family.”

The life of an independent film should not end with a screening or a curated programme. A film can meet a new audience in another city, enter a new community or classroom, or simply lead one viewer from one discovery to the next.

Thank you to all the screening partners who made Our Selves on Screen possible, and to everyone who encountered these films with us, online and in person.
