Locarno Film Festival 1999-2021 7 films

The Locarno Film Festival, founded in 1946, is one of the world’s oldest and most influential international film festivals, usually held in Locarno, Switzerland each midsummer. Through its International Competition, Cineasti del Presente, Pardi di Domani, and the iconic Piazza Grande open-air screenings, it brings avant-garde aesthetics and independent cinema from around the globe to public audiences, serving as a crucial launch point for emerging auteurs and groundbreaking works onto the international stage.

Since its post-WWII inception, Locarno has championed “freedom, discovery, and inclusion,” continuously unveiling and presenting world cinema that combines artistic originality with vital societal insight on the shores of Lake Maggiore. This selection gathers CathayPlay titles that were screened or awarded at the festival, tracing the long relationship between this historic platform for visionary cinema and Chinese independent filmmaking.
