Beyond the Assembly Line: Restructuring the East Asian Labor Landscape
Over the past few decades, East Asia has stood as one of the world’s most intensive hubs for global manufacturing. From Japan and South Korea to Taiwan and Mainland China, large-scale industrialization has not only forged the region’s economic miracles but has also profoundly shaped the lived experiences of generations of workers. Today, however, amid the restructuring of global supply chains, industrial relocation, automated production, and the rise of digital platforms, the traditional factory is undergoing a radical metamorphosis. Labor is increasingly breaking free from the singular production space of the assembly line, reorganizing itself within new structures such as logistics systems, the platform economy, transnational migration, and technological management. Rather than suggesting that factories are disappearing, it is more accurate to say that labor is being reconfigured by new technological and capital systems.
This documentary film package centers on the transformation of East Asian labor forms amid shifting global industrial dynamics. Spanning assembly line workers to transnational migrants, youth in manufacturing to labor rights activists, and industrial zones to digital infrastructure, these works collectively trace the trajectory of East Asia’s labor landscape over the past two decades. In doing so, they constantly interrogate a core question: as modes of production shift, how are the bodies, identities, and lived experiences of workers being reshaped?
We Were Smart (2019) utilizes the oral histories of young workers in the Pearl River Delta to document assembly line labor and factory culture during the peak of global manufacturing. Factory Youth (2016) focuses on the work and daily lives of young laborers within industrial parks. Houjie Township (2003) uses a manufacturing town as a lens to present the realities faced by migrant labor within the “Made in China” ecosystem. Old Crane (2014) captures the complex interplay between labor, family, and individual destiny through the later-life experiences of an ordinary worker. Ants Dynamics (2021) dives straight into the lived realities of everyday workers, using nuanced and sustained observation to reveal the relationship between individual survival, labor experiences, and structural pressures in contemporary society.
At the same time, labor continues to rupture the physical boundaries of the factory. We the Workers (2017) shifts its gaze toward labor organizations and rights activism, interrogating new labor relations and systemic dilemmas. The South Korean documentary Factory Complex (2015) traces the history of female labor in South Korea’s export-driven industries, exposing the hidden human costs behind rapid economic growth. The Taiwanese documentary The Lucky Woman (2020) focuses on transnational migrant workers and care labor, illustrating how individuals navigate and seek out possibilities for survival against the backdrop of globalization. Dissociation (2022) employs visual experimentation within industrial spaces and automated production environments to explore bodily experiences and perceptual shifts within technological systems.
Through this curated selection, we witness more than just the disparate life experiences of workers across different regions; we uncover a cohesive trajectory of change in East Asian labor forms—moving from rigid factory discipline to new modes of technological management, and from assembly line production to ever-evolving systems of labor organization. As the spaces, forms, and structures of labor continue to shift, these documentaries serve as a vital reminder that every industrial upgrade brings with it a realignment of labor practices and social relations. Ultimately, to understand these transformations is to understand the very fabric of the contemporary society we live in today.
