Our Selves on Screen: A Global Chinese Queer Film Showcase
From June to July, CathayPlay partners with screening venues in New York, Hamburg, Chiang Mai, Melbourne and beyond to present “Our Selves on Screen,” a global Chinese queer film showcase. Over a dozen works will be shown both online and in person: a documentary shot after the beating of gay men at Zhengzhou People’s Park (People’s Park), the secret bond between two boys in a Malaysian religious boarding school (Langit Budak Biru), a London-based Asian boy’s love for a Christian (Christian), and five young women speaking openly about masturbation (Modern Masturbation Allegory). Teenage girls testing their feelings for each other (The Night), two former Tinder matches reconnecting by a hometown river (Water Under the Bridge), a ritual of breakup captured by just two people (Take Yourself Home), a love story told entirely in sign language and physical touch (Echo Each Other), and the delicate dance of will-they-won’t-they in Shall We Dance — these are joined by a voyeuristic tale from Taipei (Gaze in Silence), two gay couples holding a public wedding on Beijing’s Qianmen Street (New Beijing, New Marriage), the courage to come out of the closet (Chinese Closet), mothers learning to accept their queer children (Mama Rainbow), and the legendary life of Wu Jinxia (Golden Gate Girls), a Hong Kong-born, short-haired, cross-dressing female director who became a New York restaurateur. Watch online at CathayPlay’s website, or join in-person screenings and receive a membership voucher to bring the warmth home.
