The filming that lasted for more than two years began with Zangzi’s sudden suspension from school. The father believed that it was the creature comforts that stimulated children’s unnecessary psychological needs, resulting in an increasing number of teenage suicides nowadays. The reticent mother, on the other hand, was always careful with her child. And the child, Zangzi, started to break Buddhist taboos after repeated attempts to communicate with his parents had failed. The title “So long and thanks for all the fish” is taken from Douglas Adams’s series of novels “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. I considered the relationship between humans and dolphins in the book as a typical symbol of Asian family relationships: parents demand their children with obedience and gratitude, and seldom do they express love. Should the next generation be required to embrace the religion of their family? How will they deal with the differences between themselves and those around them because of their belief?
