The Songhe Mani Stone City is a holy place in the region of Kham in Tibet. Everyday hundreds of Tibetan Buddhists flock to the mani stone city to circumambulate the site and turn the many prayers wheels there. Due to the unique geographical characteristics of its location, Songhe Mani is a pristine place. Most of the local nomads speak hardly any Chinese, and they maintain their traditional way of life, their profound Buddhist faith and their loyalty to the traditional figures of authority in the region. So, when the authority of the local incarnate lama is challenged, the local people unconsciously defend his authority, at the expense of their own interests and the losses they might incur as a result. They even go as far as slandering the innocent outsiders in that process. The outsiders’ attempts to use modern, legal concepts and ideas to try and solve the conflict end in failure. This phenomenon is an inevitable reaction from people who have lived for centuries under the authoritarian control of local powers. It is also a phenomenon that finds resonance in other parts of modern China.
