This film grew out of a documentary shoot. For a brief moment, two phone booths in Beijing became a conduit for voices from Huludao, a northeastern town long scarred by pollution. People used them to send their pain outward, to be heard. Days later, the booths were marked for removal as “noise.”Having witnessed so many voices dismissed as noise, I turned to fiction to tell a story about listening.
