When I was young, I was pretty rebellious and often crude to my father. I knew I was hurting him, but my anger pushed me to act. Then regret would flood in, and I would feel deep sadness.This flow of emotions keeps visiting me again and again, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, as if I am an empty shell with emotions pouring in and out.Hurting someone you love feels like a kind of death, yet it also shows how much you care. Two people who care for each other always seem on edge, aware of their power to hurt one another.In the film, the mother and son have only each other. They are conscious of each other’s emotions and work hard not to hurt one another. Yet all this working hard feels like pretension. We pretend not to be angry, we pretend not to be sad, and we live a life of pretenses together.
