This film tells the extraordinary story of a soldier named Tang Menglong. After the breakout of the Lukouchiao Incident in 1937, the young Tang Menglong joined the army with the passion and love to defend the motherland and accidentally became the attendant guard of the famous Anti-Japanese War General Song Xilian. He followed Song to fight battles throughout the length and breadth of the country. After the Victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, he was admitted to the 9th Branch of Huangpu Military Academy (aka Dihua Branch) and became a student in the Department of Infantry and Cavalry.
In 1948, Tang Menglong served as the commander of the Cavalry Regiment which got involved in the Civil War and was captured. After his demobilization, he returned to his hometown and got married and had children. His wife was a female soldier of the PLA Art Troupe. In the 1950s and 1960s, Tang’s fate took a turn for the worse. Because of his identity as a former Kuomingtang’s soldier, he suffered the hit of all the previous political campaigns. His wife and children were deeply implicated.
In his later years, Tang suffered from poverty and illness. However, he was fortunate to receive the attention and care of the local government and civil veterans volunteers, and enjoyed the comfort of dying.
