1957年，一批被打成右派的兰州大学师生，被送到甘肃农村进行劳动改造。他们在那目睹了大跃进的荒唐和大饥荒饿殍遍野的惨烈，其中几个人自发办了一个地下刊物《星火》，记录农村的浮夸、贫困和饥饿，成为大饥荒时期留下的唯一民间思想刊物。这些人在后来多被处以重刑，有数人在文革时被枪决。
