First scene: dawn, the foggy sub-Yangtze region, an old man practices Tai Chi in the shadow of worn-down residential buildings. Soon this 83-year-old man begins narrating his life experience to the camera. When he was in primary school his music school teacher from the communist party greatly influenced him. In college he infiltrated the provisional Japanese puppet government. In the civil war he served in the 35th platoon of the communist army during the historic crossing of the Yangtze river and taking of the capital city Nanjing. During the chaotic post-1949 political movements, his wife was killed by anti-reactionaries. He himself was repeatedly criticized and punished during the Cultural Revolution, being blinded in one eye and having to care for his three daughters alone his whole life (he never re-married). After political and economic reforms, he became the principal of a university in Hangzhou. Now his life is reading, singing, and practicing Qigong.
