Exile
Release Year: 2021
Su Dongming, nicknamed "Cousin", is a primary school student in Lan Indiyao on the Sino-Vietnamese border. In the eyes of others, he is lagging behind in studies, fights and curses, and likes to do some ridiculous behaviors. Throughout his campus life, Su Dongming slipped through a chess game indifferently and then took the initiative to enter the game. He was not very interested in Go at first, but in the end he seemed to like Go again. This process seemed to be black humor, and it also seemed to be a destined chess game in life, an uncontrollable self-exile.

Students like "cousin" Su Dongming are not an exception in the southwest border area. They are a group with blurred identities. They don't know where the past came from, how to deal with the present, and how to look forward to the future. The classrooms have become more beautiful, room and board are free, tuition fees are gone, there are more teachers, and there are more books... The objective world around Su Dongming is colorful, but none of it enters his subjective world.
In the film, when others said that Su Dongming did not study, his cousin responded angrily with bad gestures. Although Su Dongming doesn't study, he still pretends to be calm. He even lends dictionaries to underachievers and his good friends to complete their homework. Those "better surroundings" couldn't interest Su Dongming at all, and violence and bullying became good medicine for his spiritual world, exciting, stimulating and even decisive. When asked whether China or the United States is better, he firmly chose China. He said that his home is here and he has no strong intention to go out. The usual two English exams were interspersed with Chinese recitation on a certain day, and this time he recited it well. He is so complex yet so simple. After a lot of joking, playing and hitting, and a few extreme bad behaviors, his fourth grade was over, but another round began. We should really think about, what do these exiled teenagers really need in their hearts? Whether it is the effective companionship of the family, the precise responsibility of the school, or the improvement of the social atmosphere, everything has changed so drastically and so quickly that these teenagers have been exiled before they have time to think.
