Male directors have dominated Chinese independent cinema since it was born around 30 years ago. While they have been dedicated to advocating for social justice, gender inequalities rooted in Chinese independent cinema are overlooked. Female directors have been active since the beginning. Their invisibility is not for a lack of talented women but for a lack of opportunities to be heard. So CathayPlay decides to put together all female directors in “The Light of Women” filmlist to show the diversity of women’s cinema. We also try to explore the multi-dimensional “Chinese-language films”. We focus not only female directors from mainland China, but also those from Taiwan and Malaysia as well as Italian director portraying China from a unique point of view. We hope one day, all female directors would simply be referred to as —— directors.
