Yang Pingdao, in his exposition of "The River of Life," spoke of life being filled with "complexity and simplicity entwined," and his creations indeed carry such charm. Stepping into his works, one can sense the memories of his hometown and dialect, while also encountering dramatic stories and characters. With subtlety and candor, simplicity and complexity, the conflicts and contradictions of modern life, along with ambiguous relationships, are laid out in the frames of his films. Last year (2023), Yang Pingdao navigated through turbulent times and completed explorations of multiple identities. For the first time, he published his latest collection of short stories, "The Sorrow of Liangjie Ge," under his authorial identity. This book delves into themes of time, memory, and resistance against forgetting, embarking on a journey of spiritual exploration for a free filmmaker. In this book, Yang Pingdao showcases his attitude towards life, as well as his passion for creation and writing. Not aiming to inscribe history, it's more akin to touching the living flesh of this era, picking up the shards from the ruins of history, each piece stained with the warmth of human existence. This month (2/2024), CathayPlay invites you to join us in exploring the multifaceted creations of Yang Pingdao, a man whose works embody both complexity and simplicity beneath his various identities.
