In the 1970s, 6-year-old Ling was raised by a widowed mother in a small fishing village in southeastern China. She not only does housework but also works hard to make money for her 8-year-old brother to go to school. One day, her brother brought her amazing news: their mother met a man, and he wanted to place them in a place called Taiwan. Ling thought excitedly that her dream of leaving this small village was about to come true. She tossed and turned and spent a long sleepless night. But the next day, when she woke up, she found that the house was empty.
