Several boys who are about to graduate live in the 2006 dormitory. The original site of Duancun Middle School in Pingyao County was an ancient temple in the Ming Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, there was a free school. In the early years of the Republic of China, a high school (upper grade of elementary school) was established. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a county-run junior high school was established. In 2001, the high school enrollment was expanded, and the number of students in the school reached more than 1,400. For this reason, the school built a new teaching building on the playground. In the summer of 2011, more than 150 students from the school merged with two other high schools and moved into the new school in the city. Grass grows on the playground, and the gatekeeper Laomi and his family continue to live in the teaching building.

Director‘s Statement:
Duancun Middle School in Pingyao County is a rural middle school. The original site is an ancient temple in the Ming Dynasty. My grandfather, father, and younger brother have all studied here. When it was heard that Duancun Middle School was about to move into the city, all the teachers and students cheered and eagerly looked forward to this day so that they could be embraced by the city as soon as possible. The teaching building on the playground has only been built for ten years from being built to being abandoned; and it has been a school for nearly a hundred years, and a building for nearly five hundred years; however, no one cares about it.
When I was a student, we had full respect for all teachers. When I became a teacher, the opposite student was smoking a cigarette and said to me in a sophisticated way: "Who is a teacher nowadays! Right!" What have we changed during the 30 years of economic development?
"Schoolers, the origin of enlightenment", can "apply the righteousness of filial piety" and "cultivation of oneself to govern others", but now all schools cannot have this. Instead, there is ideological and political education. Examinations are education and learning. The only purpose. In rural schools, in the face of meager salaries and stubborn students, teachers no longer have the will to teach their professions and are unable to preach, and their dignity is discredited. The students are tired of school, play truant, have nothing to do, and know what to do, at a loss, restless, squandering their youth, yearning for the prosperity of the city, dreaming that one day they can get something for nothing. But are these problems only due to the failure of education? The more important reason comes from the influence of this society on them. Their understanding of the world is inseparable from his living environment, living area, social class, and so on. As mentioned in their textbooks: "Consciousness is the response of the human brain to the objective world." Their speech, behavior, mental state, and value identity are a true portrayal of the current rural society. They are the future of rural society, but from a factual perspective, they are likely to become idle and unemployed people in society.
Behind the decline of the century-old school is the collapse of the humanistic value system of rural society. From then on, "being out of courtesy" has become a luxury.
